Think Google!

Google has officially launched its own phone; the phone is available through Google’s website www.google.com/phone. So why the phone? It’s very obvious that Google wants to take control and a piece of the app market from Apple. Although this approach is good but Google in my opinion is thinking long-term, or maybe the very long-term. It is focusing on the mobile web future. As .COM was to the Internet the .MOBI will be to the mobile net. That is where Google is heading for leadership.

Technological advancements will make phones cheaper, affordable, fast and easy to use. This will reduce Apple’s leadership and its share of the app market. Google has already acquired Admob, the world’s largest mobile advertising platform, strengthening the notion that Google is just not there for the app market share.

Basing your future and strategy on something like apps, in my opinion is short sightedness. Although no brand can predict the future with 100% certainty but keeping a close eye on your competitor and being a devil’s advocate once in a while doesn’t hurt either. (Hint Hint, Apple!)
