
Some inventions have had profound impact on our lives over the course of time, starting from the invention of the Abacus, to Asipirin, the barcode, the Blackberry, the light bulb and the credit cards among many but only few have been complete game changers. The invention of the printing press in 1454 revolutionized and started a new era of modernity and represented a complete shift from earlier practices.
We have seen similar changes in the recent past. Google, which started out as a meager search engine has come a long way. Google’s products such as Google Voice, Android, Nexus in the telecom domain, investments in content, ownership of YouTube and Google TV in the media domain makes it a game changer not just in one industry but many others. Their successful advertising model coupled with the success of their other products earned them $6.7 Billion dollars in the first quarter of 2010. Google has converged many industries, from media to telecom to of course technology.
So what am I trying to get at here?
Well, the iPad, the latest offering from Apple could be the next game changer. This 9.5 X 7.5 tablet has the ability to converge video content, print media and interactivity of the web into a single platform, therefore impacting all of them (Yes I know it does not support Flash, but we will get to that later). It is a new way of consuming content, away from the printed world and integrated with rich video and web features. Some recent examples include AKQA's iPad app for GAP and BBH’s app for Cadillac. The device has had other significant impacts as well:
- Fedex recently bought advertising space on the iPad applications from Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek
- Advertisers including Unilever, Toyota Motor, Korean Air and Fidelity have booked space on Time’s iPad application
- The Wall Street Journal said a subscription to its app would cost $17.99 a month, and the first advertisers included Capital One, Buick, Oracle, iShares and FedEx
These marketing change is just a hint of what has yet to come. Game Changer. No?
