Inspiring

I came across this amazing post on Wieden + Kennedy's Blog. This is Dan Wieden's speech at the 4A's, it is one of the most inspiring pieces that I have come across from an industry leader himself. He points out how the communications/advertising industry is so wrong. People who are predominantly part of one one social/ethnic group and how they are still able to make 'strategies' to sell to a demographic/cultural group they don't know about it. Most of the marketing is done on perception, although some time they may be close but most of times they are way off.
Canadian Advertising/communication industry is, for lack of a better word, plagued with this as well. Pick up any major campaign and you would see it. Putting a black person among four white in a print ad/TV spot is considered representing the multicultural demographic. I hope the Canadian advertising/communications industry  wakes up and smells the coffee too!
Oh and a little piece of research if someone is reading this, the largest ethnic group is not represented by the Black people, it's the South Asians!
